We have been having a blast with bubba bear
and the letter Bb! The children are amazing me
with their desire to learn each letter animal
and the sound they make. Many want to use
the letter cards during play/choice time and
then more children will join in! They are
gaining great skills in phonemic awareness and
listening to words that begin with the "b"
sound.

We read "Big" all week long. Children brought
this book home, and they can all read the
book! They are getting so excited that they
can read a book. Not only did they enjoy
reading, but the we also did activities that
looked at comparing big and small objects. We
also read "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do
You See?", and "Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What
do You Hear?". We not only read, but
compared the similarities and differences of
the books. The children are learning what a
title is, author, and illustrator are. They
remind me every time to read the author and
illustrator!

We planted our beans and they are hanging in
the window of our class. Each day will make
observations. We will compare what the bean
started as, what it looks like, and then when it
grows we will measure it.

Speaking of beans....we sorted beans, used
describing words when looking at different
kinds of beans and counted beans! Something
as simple as beans sparked so much interest.

They have enjoyed our bear poem so much that
we are continuing it this week. Each child gets
to move the felt bears and props, which they
all can't wait until it is there turn to help.

It seems that we have a lot of budding artists.
Children are enjoying painting and now they
are starting to make wonderful comments
about each others work. They love discovering
what colors they can create when they mix
them together.

Some things that children did this week:

-Some children took the new pointer sticks
and went around the room looking at all of the
written language, finding all of the a's and b's!

-Children have been stopping in mid
conversation when they say a word that has
the b sound....they are so proud that they are
hearing the sound and discovering how many
words start with that sound.

-The light table is getting a lot of use!
Children are now sharing materials at the light
table. They are trying everything from sorting
colored gems to sorting letters and trying to
spell words.

-A couple of children have enjoyed using the
scale to see what is heavy, what is light, and
what weighs more. Two students decided to
make balls out of play dough and then put the
balls in one by one to see if they could make
the scale even!

-Sharing has been one of the highlights of the
week! Every child has really made great gains
in sharing and really working through problems
by examining feelings and different solutions
that they come up with, with the support of a
teacher. It has been so great to see the
students really becoming a community of
learners.

-Our review time is becoming so much more
interactive. Children have been reviewing play
by telling bubba bear, being a tv reporter and
describing their play with more describing
words and who they played with. Such an
important skills for memory and organizing
information!
