We learned about Allie the Alligator and the
sound she makes is "aaaa". During meeting time,
we learned about Bubba Bear, Catina Cat, Dee
Dee Dear, and Ellie Elephant. We learned the
sounds each makes and the movement we make
for them. All of the children loved this and
enjoy going on safari hunts with the animals!

For math we colored Allie a's with primary
colors, charted our a's and then counted to see
how many of each we colored. Children loved
singing 5 monkeys in the tree and 5 green and
speckled frogs. They counted, subtracted, and
identified numbers 1-5 using the felt board
materials. During morning meeting we made it
all the way to five items on our message board!
Students helped identify numbers, figure out
and what numbers are before and after certain
numbers. We focused on apples this week an
children made an apple project with counting
apple seeds. Children identified numbers 1-6
and counted one to one correspondence with
numbers 1-6.

All the children loved reading "The Apple Tree"
and "Applesauce". They will be making their
own books to take home and read to families
next week. Students had turns with the Allie
Alligator pointer to read the message board
and the schedule. Pictures on the message
board and schedule really help us read and then
some words are becoming automatic sight
words! They enjoyed making Allie Alligator
pointer sticks and they should be coming home
to find things in the house that start with the
aaa as in Allie sound. They can also go on a
letter hunt when reading books and search for
letter a's. These are just some of the activities
we did with reading.

We focused on primary colors and what
happens when we mix primary colors. Making
apple prints was fun. Some mixed colors, other
made patterns, and some decided to smear the
apples. What great creative minds. They all
worked hard on their apple books and used
different mediums to decorate each page.

For review, students were curious to see what
toys I had collected in the mystery bag. They
each took turns as reporters and reported to
the group what they played with using a
microphone. It was amazing to see each child
draw and then tell a story about what they did
at play. We are learning how to be wonderful
communicators in a group and sequence events
from play.

Some child initiated activities this week:

Out on the playground some children found
large and small rocks. They started to sort
them in piles, but when they found one that was
not large or small we discovered a new math
vocabulary word, "medium"! So then they had
three piles and a math lesson was underway.

A couple of students got really excited with
magnets and realized that the magnets didn't
always stick together. So, we discovered
polarization. One student experimented for 20
minutes and then started going around the room
trying to figure out what metal was magnetic!

Some children learned that sometimes playing
with friends is hard work, but it is so exciting
to grow with our social skills and learn to work
together!

One child took the hammer/golf tee and
hammered all of the tees to make the capital A!
It was a lot of hard work, but he was so proud
when the finished product looked so amazing.

We are sticking with the letter Aa next week
and exploring more with Allie, one of the
hardest working letters in the alphabet!!
