The past two weeks we have focused on Cc and Catina Cat.
The children loved The Very Hungry Caterpillar and the different activities we did. Our main focus became leaves! The children were so fascinated with investigating what trees we have around the church, based on the leaves we found. We matched the leaves to pictures of different tree's leaves. One day the children decided that they wanted to see if they could find leaves that caterpillars or bugs had eaten, like the very hungry caterpillar. One student realized that if we put the leaves on the light table, you could look at the holes eaten through the light! During our investigating, we expanded children's vocabulary by describing he leaves and even learned new math skills. Some leaves were half green and half yellow, so some of the children were trying to find leaves that looked like they were split in half with colors. The afternoon class can create graphs and interpret the data so fast! We created a leaf graph in such a short amount of time. They were counting, looking at the last leaf and going over to see what number was on the left side of the graph, and we double checked our work by then counting the leaves. It is so exciting to see them get so excited about these math concepts.
Each week you can see the anticipation about what readable books we are going to read. The are really enjoying "Funny Cat". Most children can now tell me what an author does and what an illustrator does. We have also been working on looking at pictures and remember phrases that are repeated to help them read the weekly books. Our other books have focused on Fall. This week our book is about all of the wonderful food that we can make out of pumpkins! Next week we will be tasting some of the food that is in the book.
Speaking of pumpkins, we have cut into a pumpkin and used describing words and used our senses to investigate the inside and outside of the pumpkin. I love hearing them expand their vocabulary and then communicate with one another using the new words and describing words we used when we were exploring as a group. The seeds have been used for creating pumpkin "counting" patches and we will be tasting the seeds too.
I am still amazed to see even our two year olds stating the letter sounds and the animals associated with them. Children are really getting the hang of phonemic awareness and we will continue to work on listening for the beginning sound and next week add on and listen for the ending sound. Rhyming will also start being a focus! Both morning and afternoon classes continue to explore more and more and often it involves literacy or math. Both classes are really moving ahead socially and lots of friendships are developing!
