Kindergarten Curriculum

Kindergarten academics will, at the minimum, follow the common core
National/State standards
by using research based curriculum. All
Curriculum used promotes all levels of learners to make progress,
whether they are below grade level, at grade level, or beyond grade level
The core curriculum that will be used is HighScope. Like the preschool
curriculum, children learn by actively being involved with their learning. The
schedule of Kindergarten will include time that children will be child directed
and core academics will be taught in a systematic way, teacher directed, using
curriculum that is research based. Core instruction (Reading, Math, and Writing)
will be taught in the "learning room" that provides less stimulation and toys to
help with focus and learning.

Reading- 90 minutes spread throughout the day to meet criteria for sufficient
amount of time based off of the National Reading Panel Research

Treasures
by Macmillan McGraw-Hill

It is crucial to have a solid comprehensive core reading curriculum that includes
the five pillars of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary,
comprehension and fluency. The research from the National Reading Panel clearly
indicated that the five areas be taught in a systematic and explicit way. In
addition, the core curriculum should provide large group instruction, as well as
small group skill based instruction. Purchasing Treasures was a huge
commitment, but with Sandy's knowledge and experience in Reading, she
understands the importance of a solid curriculum to teach the fundamentals of
reading.

In addition to classroom instruction, families and students have access to online
activities and information that correlate with each unit taught. Please visit the
following website for samples, information, and resources:

Children will be assessed three times a year. If children are below reading
levels, they will be assessed more frequently and will be given additional
instruction in the areas that are needing a boost.

Writing- We will use First Strokes verbal prompts for the mechanical
component of writing. This program was developed by Occupational Therapists
and focuses on learning writing using a multi-sensory approach. Each letter is
taught by the first stroke used and there is verbal prompts for each stroke.
Children are provided visual prompts with Billy the Seal to teach appropriate
letter lengths, and where each stroke starts, stops, and the direction of the
stroke. When children can write with ease, then they can focus on writing words,
sentences, and stories!

Writing is incorporated in the Treasures Curriculum. C
hildren will learn to write
sentences, stories, use graphic organizers for writing, correct punctuation, and
more!
