Sandy HighScope will be using Response to Intervention for Reading and Math. Basically
Response to Intervention provides schools and teachers very specific information about
how students are progressing in areas of development. It is somewhat like a dipstick test
to see if each child is on the right track compared to children his/her age and can indicate
whether or not students are at risk in each area. If students are not making the progress
we should expect, there is a systematic way of determining whether or not they need
more specific help in certain areas. We will always keep you informed, and it is a team
process to see what steps we should take. If a child needs extra help, they will receive it
within the class time during small group time, and be instructed on whatever skills they
are having trouble with. We don't have to wait for children to fail in elementary school, if
they just need a little boost! Many school districts provide Response to Intervention, and
a link has been provided on our Resources link. It is a great way for everyone to really
make sure that children are mastering skills in early literacy and math skills...and if they
aren't, we can help them in a positive, fun way!
Each child will be assessed in Early Literacy and Early Math three times a year.
For those students who are not progressing at the rate that is typical for their age, they
will be assessed one to four times a month, depending on their skill level. This will provide
valuable information so the teachers can provide more individual attention and instruction
in very specific skills.
Part of the HighScope curriculum is the use of assessments. It
is a way to systematically look at were children are in all areas
of development, and then plan on what we need to teach them so
they can continue to learn and develop early childhood skills!
We will use the Preschool Child Observation (COR). This
assessment is done by the teacher observing and documenting
what the child says and does. Parents are also asked to
participate, as much as they would like, and their observations
become part of the assessment. This assessment is completed
three times a year. We will have parent/teacher meetings for
those who want to sit down and go over their child's
development and assessment.
It is a great way to look at meaningful educational outcomes,
gather information in a way that is natural and comfortable for
children and provides accurate data that can be used for
individual child planning.
